It was almost natural for me to wake up at 6:45 AM this morning. I had been accustomed to waking up at 6 for the past couple of days. The San Francisco morning was a grey as ever as I made the trek (my mom drove me, actually) to the Parnassus shuttle stop. “Edna, where are you?” I remember Eric asking her on his cell phone. It was near 8:00. The shuttle was about the leave. She was still 10 minutes away, so Eric, Ryan and I went ahead and took the shuttle to Mission Bay. To our surprise, we arrived at 8:15 AM. Work didn’t start until 9. We were early, Raquel. Weren’t you pleased? :)

At 10:00, it was time for the mini-lecture. Introductions went around, of course, followed by presentations by Ben, Oliver, and David. Ben introduced us to our upcoming two-week bootcamp, Oliver went over the central dogma of biology and model organisms. They then gave us a 15 minute break, but after that it was David’s turn to teach us just how, exactly, one should go about reading a scientific paper. Tonight’s homeowork: Finish reading the paper about GFP.

I thought the lecture was great, though we the team could have been a bit more awake and focused. Thank you, Raquel for pointing out that it was okay for me to say things that I think might not even be true. If this was just Biology class, I would have never ventured to say it, but this isn’t. This is iGEM. I’ll be more confident in what I have to say.

On a lighter note, we’re getting our ID cards tomorrow! (Hopefully.)
